Let’s talk about beer brewing in Indonesia

Indonesian beer market

Beer is one of the oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic drinks in the world and the third most popular drink after water and tea. Believed to have originated in ancient Mesopotamia 6,000 to 7,000 years ago, 180+  billion liters of beer are now brewed globally every year with Asia being the largest beer-producing region in the world (as of 2009).

Beer has become the most popular alcoholic beverage in Indonesia with over $1 billion in sales in 2020, and despite Indonesia lagging behind its regional counterparts in per-capita alcohol consumption, there is a lot of potential for growth from increases in tourism and local beer consumption.

Craft breweries in Indonesia

While most beers on the Indonesian market have traditionally been imported or derived from European countries, in recent years, craft breweries have made a splash on the scene and have made their mark on the Indonesian beer market.

Craft breweries have been gaining worldwide momentum since the 1970s, yet craft beer has only recently become a trend in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. While most traditional and commercial breweries follow strict (often centuries-old) recipes and processes, craft breweries see brewing as more of an art form, leading to a lot more experimentation and allowing for new levels of innovation that benefit the consumer’s palate, by merging traditional beer processes with a sophisticated and modernized approach.

The building blocks of beer

There are several main components in the art of beer making, namely water, yeast, malt, and hops. It’s important to have a quality source of water. Malt provides the necessary sugars and carbohydrates required to feed the yeast that activates the fermentation process.  Malt is also responsible, in part, for the colour, flavour and foam properties of beer.

Yeast and malt are the essential backbones of the beer brewing process – without them, beer wouldn’t contain alcohol nor CO2.

Beers (and especially craft beers) each have their own distinct flavours and aromas. Hops play an important role in bringing out these unique flavours and aromas and also in keeping the beer fresher for longer.
